For residential properties, we install gutter systems designed around the home's actual roof configuration. A smaller bungalow, a large two-storey house with multiple roof sections, and a home surrounded by mature Douglas-fir or cedar trees can all have very different drainage requirements.

When we assess a residential gutter installation, we pay attention to where roof sections discharge water, how long each gutter run is, where valleys concentrate runoff and whether the existing downspout locations make sense. This is important because a gutter can be perfectly installed but still perform poorly if too much roof area is feeding one undersized section.


What We Look At During a Residential Installation

Roof catchment area: The amount of roof surface draining toward a particular gutter run helps determine how much water that section needs to handle.

Gutter size: Standard residential systems commonly use 5-inch K-style gutters, while larger or more demanding roof sections may justify a 6-inch system. Local gutter installers commonly offer both 5-inch and 6-inch seamless aluminum systems throughout Greater Victoria.

Downspout capacity: The downspout has to move the water collected by the gutter. The CRD's residential rainwater guidance identifies 2" x 3" or 3" x 3" downspouts as common choices for typical residential drainage, with larger gutter systems requiring larger downspouts depending on the drainage area.

Gutter pitch: Gutters need enough slope to encourage water to move toward the outlets without creating an obvious sag or low spot where water can sit.

Fascia condition: New gutters need something solid to fasten into. If the fascia behind an old gutter is soft, deteriorated or water-damaged, that needs to be addressed rather than simply covering the problem with a new gutter.

We also understand that the gutter is visible from the ground, so appearance matters. A properly sized gutter should complement the fascia and roofline rather than looking oversized or poorly proportioned.

Types of Gutters We Can Install

5-Inch K-Style Gutters

5-inch K-style is one of the most common residential gutter profiles.

K-style gutters have a relatively flat back that sits against the fascia and a shaped front edge that gives them their distinctive architectural appearance. They're practical, widely available and well suited to many standard residential roof configurations.

For a typical Victoria home, a 5-inch K-style system can be a very sensible starting point, but we don't recommend choosing the size based on the house's floor area alone. The roof catchment area feeding each gutter section is what matters.


6-Inch K-Style Gutters

6-inch K-style gutters provide additional carrying capacity for larger or more demanding drainage areas.

We may recommend a larger gutter where there is a large roof section, steep roof, concentrated runoff from multiple roof planes or another reason that the additional capacity is beneficial.

Greater Victoria gutter installers commonly offer 6-inch seamless aluminum systems for larger residential and commercial applications.

The important distinction is that bigger is not automatically better. The gutter, outlets and downspouts need to work together. A 6-inch gutter paired with an undersized outlet or downspout doesn't magically turn the whole drainage system into a high-capacity system.


Fascia-Style Gutters

Fascia-style gutters have a cleaner, more streamlined appearance and can be useful where the fascia profile or architectural style calls for a different look.

They are also available in larger-capacity configurations, with Greater Victoria installers offering fascia-style systems alongside conventional K-style gutters.

For homes where appearance is a major consideration, fascia gutters can provide a more integrated look along the roofline.


Half-Round Gutters

Half-round gutters have a curved, semicircular profile rather than the angular front of a K-style gutter.

They're particularly attractive on traditional homes, character properties and architecture where a modern K-style gutter would look out of place. The curved profile also gives them a distinctive appearance that works well with round downspouts and traditional gutter hardware.

Half-round aluminum systems are available in both 5-inch and 6-inch configurations.


Aluminum Gutters

Aluminum is one of the most common materials used for modern gutter systems because it combines relatively low weight with good corrosion resistance and easy fabrication.

How Our Gutter Installation Process Works

1. We Assess the Existing Roof Drainage

Before installing anything, we look at the existing gutter layout and how water currently moves across the roof.

We check for obvious problems such as sagging gutters, poor drainage, overflowing sections, damaged fascia, undersized downspouts and outlets positioned in inefficient locations.


2. We Measure the Roof and Gutter Runs

This is where the installation gets a little more technical.

Rather than simply measuring the length of the old gutters, we consider the roof catchment area feeding each section. The CRD's residential rainwater guidance uses roof length multiplied by roof width as a basic method for calculating catchment area and then provides guidance for selecting downspout sizes based on gutter size and drainage area.

Roof valleys and multiple roof planes are particularly important because they can concentrate water into one relatively small section of gutter.


3. We Choose the Gutter Profile and Size

Once we understand the roof drainage, we can determine whether a 5-inch, 6-inch or another appropriate profile makes sense.

For many homes, 5-inch K-style is sufficient. Larger roofs and commercial applications may benefit from 6-inch systems or other higher-capacity profiles.

We'd rather size the system according to the building than automatically sell the biggest gutter available.


4. We Plan the Downspouts

A gutter is only half of a rainwater drainage system.

We determine where the outlets and downspouts should go so collected water can leave the gutter efficiently. The CRD recommends common residential downspout sizes of 2" x 3" or 3" x 3" for typical applications, while larger drainage areas may require larger configurations.

We also pay attention to elbows and offsets because every change in direction affects how efficiently water moves through the system.


5. We Prepare the Fascia and Mounting Points

A gutter is only as reliable as the structure supporting it.

Before fastening the new system, we check the fascia and mounting areas for signs of deterioration. The gutter then needs to be secured with appropriately spaced hangers rather than relying on a few attachment points to carry the entire run.

The CRD's residential guidance recommends hanger spacing of no more than 450 mm (18 inches), which illustrates why proper fastening matters on long gutter runs.


6. We Install the Gutter Runs and Outlets

The gutter sections are positioned with the appropriate fall toward their outlets. Long straight runs can be fabricated as continuous sections, reducing the number of seams along the system.

Corners, end caps, outlets and downspout connections are then fitted so the complete system works together rather than treating each component as a separate piece.



7. We Check Water Flow

The final step isn't simply making sure the gutter looks straight.

We check the completed system for obvious low spots, drainage issues, loose connections and problematic discharge points. The goal is to leave you with a gutter system that actually moves water rather than one that merely looks good from the driveway.
